Good Health Doesn't Just Happen


    A great many of the diseases afflicting Americans today are believed to be caused by genetic factors that we cannot control. In reality the vast majority of these ailments are not genetic but rather epigenetic.


   Epigenetics is an emerging field of biological study that seeks to unravel the great debate of "nature vs. nurture" to help us answer whether or not what we have is something we were born with or something in our environment that influenced our health.



   The answer is that both genetics and environment shape our health, but it is the environmental factors that have the greatest sway over how our genes express themselves. Not only that but it is the environmental factors that are most within our control. The decisions we make about what to eat, where to live, how to think and what to do all dictate our current and future health either causing or preventing disease.



   The book Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride tells of a make-believe family. Their story begins with a grandmother that experiences the flu or other infectious disease and ends up with mildly abnormal gut flora due to the stress. She later gives birth to a daughter who has allergies and ear infections and spends a great deal of time on antibiotics. The family also indulges in plenty of sweets, candy bars, cookies and cakes. Eventually a grandbaby is born and is found to have behavioral disorders and asthma. The story in the book is much longer but the end result is that they are told "It must be hereditary." When in fact it is really due to generational lifestyle choices that continue to weaken this family's immune system.


   The good news is we are not doomed by bad genes. We can navigate our genetic roadmap and take ourselves down the path of better health by making the right choices with food, air, water, environment and stress. We can also teach these things to our children to pass a healthy future along to them!
